I’m Back!
Aug 25th
Hey everyone! David here! I just wanted to say hello to everyone! I’m finally back after my 12 month exile to Oklahoma.
If you haven’t checked out our FaceBook or Twitter feeds, check those out. We post things there that may not require a full blog post like links to news articles and other interesting tidbits of info.
Also, don’t forget about our forums! Just like the Creative Cow forum we had, this is where you can post for help finding someone to fill a local gig. You can also post about gear for sale or needed.
Can’t wait to see all of you at the next meeting!
Supermeet in Amsterdam
Aug 24th
Not sure how many of you out there are world travelers especially in this economy but this is a quick video iChat that was posted on The Area, an Autodesk users group web page that I often frequent, and I thought it might be of interest to others in our FCP user group as it features an interview with Dan Bérubé and Michael Horton, co-founders of the FCPUG & SuperMeet.
Enjoy.

Apple announces new Hex Core Mac Pro’s and 27″ Monitors
Jul 27th
Apple has announced updated versions of their MacPro line of desktop workstations. You can preview the new systems here. You’d best hold on to your seat and pocket book as they are not cheap. The current listing is $4,995 for a dual Hex Core Mac Pro. No price listing yet on the 27″ monitors but they will boast the same resolution as the 27″ iMacs which is 2560 x 1440. It has built in iSite camera which would be expected. It also boasts a 49Watt stereo system which surprised me. There was also an upgrade announced to the iMac lineup with faster graphics and cpu’s as well as a trackpad device.
Now, I don’t usually rant much or at least I try not to but I have to say that for me, I’m really disappointed with this MacPro upgrade. There has been no upgrade to the total system what so ever. Apple slapped in a couple of new CPU’s, jacked the clock a tad on the Quad and Octo core machines and that is about it. The specifications for USB 3.0 and SATA III have been out for a considerable amount of time. There are scores of Windows platforms available which feature these newer interfaces. Apple has announced SSD drives but having a screaming drive hooked up to an old interface is just a bit if a joke. You are not going to get the performance you could be getting had you had a SATA III vs a SATA II interface.
I REALLY hope that the new FCP that is suppose to be “Awesome” is really what they are saying. If the new version of the MacPro is suppose to be Apple’s hardware version of “Awesome” me thinks there will be a lot of underwhelmed users.
So what are all of your thoughts?

FCP Tips and Tricks
Since we had a meeting on June 2nd at the Buttes in Tempe thanks to Panasonic and the folks over at EAR, we will be having our next meeting on Thursday, July 29th, at our regular meeting place at IFP. We have no set topic specifically as David and I are still lining up some speakers for 3rd party media. We may get things lined up for July’s meeting but regardless, we’ve gotten good feedback when we have simply focused the meeting on FCP editing and felt that would be a good topic as well. Come and share your favorite tips and tricks for editing with FCP and it suite of tools. We have gotten some excellent free give aways in the past month so your chances on scoring some great useful gifts have never been better.
We have lots of prizes and give aways so come and enjoy a pleasant evening with friends in some good conversation.

AZFCP Meeting Wrap Up – 4/22/10
Apr 24th
I wanted to thank everybody that showed up Wednesday and special thanks to Alina Hushka as she was our only NAB attendee representative. We covered a number of topics from plugins to utilities. I copied down the web links to the products discussed and I’ve noted them below:
1) First was CRAM Compressor which is a set of 330 Compressor presets for FCP Compressor. You can download the total list of presets here.
2) Next was a FCP plugin from Digital Anarchy called Beauty Box. This is a great plug in for anyone who does a lot of head shot interviews or weddings where there are a fair amount of post cleanups are required on the talent.
3) There was an iPhone app that I believe quite a number of AZFCP members use called MovieSlate. This is a slick little app for your iPhone that is a digital slate, clapper board, shot log, and shot notepad.
4) We talked a little about the new Canon XF300 and XF305 pro series video cameras.
5) The subject of conversion utilites came up which of which a common one that is used is MPEG Streamclip from Squared 5.
6) Conversion to the Windows side most always involves using Flip4Mac so we talked about that for a bit.
7) … as well as Perian which allows you to play FLV files within Quicktime players.
Alina also mentioned that for those interested in creating Blue-Ray authored DVD’s for distribution, the cost of generating the masters has come down by about a factor of 10. To get everything you need it is still in the $500 to $1000 range but it is a lot cheaper than what it use to cost.
We then talked about FCP installations and in particular upgrading to Snow Leopard and 64bit vs 32bit booting. The current version of FCP, as we all know, is still 32 bit but the new version of CS5 is 64bit ONLY on the Mac. While the current version of FCP does not take advantage of 64bit memory space, it will work fine while the kernel is booted in 64bit mode. If you want to boot into 64bit mode you need to hold down the 6 and 4 keys on your keyboard while you boot up your Mac. This can be more than a PITA if you have to continually repeat this. There is however, a way you can make a simple change to a configuration file so that you can always boot in 64bit mode. If you want to do this, all you need do is make the following change to the following file:
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
NOTE: BEFORE EDITING ANY SYSTEM FILE BE SURE TO MAKE A BACKUP COPY OF THE FILE SO YOU CAN RESTORE THIS FILE TO ITS ORIGINAL STATE IF REQUIRED
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Edit the file:
/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist
Insert arch=x86_64 into the Kernel Flags field.
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple Computer//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd"> <plist version="1.0"> <dict> <key>Kernel</key> <string>mach_kernel</string> <key>Kernel Flags</key> <string>arch=x86_64</string> </dict> </plist>
You should use a standard text editor like Text Wrangler.
You can verify that you have booted into 64 bit mode by going to your apple menu and selecting “About This Mac” and then click on the “More Info” button. You will be presented with the screen below. Click on the Software tab and you can see that the kernel has 64bit mode enabled.
That about wraps it up. Once again thanks to all that came. Next months meeting will be on Thursday May 20th at IFP. The topic will be 3rd party media such as audio, video and pictures for you to use in your work. Hope to see you all there!
Next FCP “Awesome?”
Apr 15th
So lately in case you don’t follow a lot of blogs, Steve Jobs has been pretty vocal when it comes to his email. He’s replied to critics that emailed him about policies and now he has responded about what is going on with Final Cut Pro. The Unofficial Apple Weblog has this story where Steve Jobs states that the next version of Final Cut Pro will be “awesome.”
After all the Adobe and Avid announcements at NAB 2010 this year, Apple really needs to step up to the plate otherwise they are going to forfeit the game. I really hope it’s going to be awesome.
