Topic: AJA Video Inc Presentation

We are very fortunate that Tery Williams from AJA Video Inc. will be at the meeting to address some exciting announcements that will soon be made by AJA.  In addition, AJA has offered a Kona 3G card (a $1995 Value!!) as a raffle prize.  This is a stellar offering.  Some lucky AZFCPUG attendee is going to have a very nice day come the end of the meeting.  There will be an attendee registration required to qualify for the raffle.  This will be a great way to close out the year.

In addition we will have our usual FCP and editing Q&A sessions so come prepared with all of your questions for the group.

In addition #2 we are announcing early, so that you may all plan with your holiday calendars, that December’s meeting will simply be a pot-luck exchange.  The meeting will be held on Wednesday, December 14th at the E3 Church at our regular meeting time of 6pm to 9pm.  We will have plates and cups and some soda.  If you could all come with something good to eat, we can all enjoy, chat and reminisce over the previous year.

In addition #3, in case you missed it.  As all of us have said a number of times, FCP7 is not dead by a long shot.  Wes Plate of Automatic Duck has been hired full time by Adobe.  As a final good-by, he is offering the entire line of Automatic Duck products for download for free.  If your workflow requires you to go back and fourth between different NLE systems one or more of his products would be a must for you.  You can download them from the following site.

We don’t have any expenses so we don’t charge any dues or fees.

Everyone’s welcome for an evening of sharing regarding video production and FCP in AZ.

Automatic Duck is now FREE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yep, you heard right.  Wes Plate, owner and main guru at Automatic Duck was recently hired by Adobe.  He and his dad have graciously decided that since they cannot support the product line anymore, they wanted to donate their products to the community.  I know lots of users are still using FCP7 and Wes even has a few products for porting to FCPX.  Just visit the Automatic Duck website and get what you need.

Cheers!

Apple releases FCPX 10.0.1

Apple announced today the release of their first major update to FCPX.  Most notable was the inclusion of XML support for project exchange of information.  It is said that with this addition and through the use of 3rd party tools from CatDV or Square Box, users will be able to take FCP7 projects and import them into FCPX.  They also now support projects via XSAN.

They mention that coming in early 2012 will be support for Multicam Editing as well as support for Broadcast-Quality Video Monitoring.

Since there was such a rash of early adopters who requested refunds, they now offer a 30 day free trial.

There were also updates to Compressor  and to Motion 5 .

Topic: DSLR and the Glidecam 2000 steadycam, AZFCPUG future direction

I am going to bring in my HD2000 Steadycam to show what can be done with this camera rig.  We will shoot some video and users will be able to try the rig out themselves.  It’s a little tricky to set up but once you get the hang of it, it works pretty good.

We would also like to have some open discussion on the future direction of the FCP users group.

An interview with Anne V. Coates

Among the many sites I peruse on a daily basis I found this link to a two part interview with Anne V. Coates.  The first part of the interview can be found here. The second part of the interview can be found here.  Ms. Coates is an Academy Award winning editor who won for best editing on Lawrence of Arabia.  On that movie she did one of the most famous jump cuts in movie  history:

Glide Cam HD-2000 analysis with a Canon 7D

I got my Glide Cam HD – 2000 for a project I’m working on.  Not long after I got it I did a quick study to see how well it worked compared to hand held footage and using software steadycam processing.  Below is a quick demonstration of that analysis.  I did a short walk, holding my 7D and then did the same walk using my Glide Cam.  I also processed both using a software plugin for steadying out camera motion.  You can see from the clip, the hand held is pretty rough as is even the processed version of the hand held.  The GlideCam version is not bad and with a little practice I’m sure that could be improved.  The steadycam processed version of the GlideCam clip is rock solid.  Not bad for a $500 investment when you compare it to the high end rigs.  Granted, a 7D is a fairly light camera but for that class of video camera (HVX200 and such) it is a pretty good trade off.

This is a steady cam study I did using my GlideCam HD-2000 with my 7D camera. I shot a short segment walking and holding my 7D as best as I could. I then reshot the same sequence using my GlideCam HD-2000. I then took both pieces of footage and did a steadcam correction using ProDAD Mercalli V2 video stabilization software for Adobe Premier Pro CS5. Just the GlideCam results are quite nice. A little more practice on my part and they would be excellent. The post stabilization on the GlideCam makes for a rock stady shot where attempting to clean my original hand held shot still left much to be desired.
